Is It Time to Change My Timing Belt?
A Timing Belt is the most important item to maintain in your engine at the recommended mileage. The Timing Belt ensures that everything runs in sync, at just the right time as needed, and will be completely thrown off if the timing is off.
The Timing Belt has a limited life span, and needs to be replaced as the manufacturer suggests in your Owner’s Manual, regardless of its visual condition. The average range is every 60,000 miles to every 105,000 miles, depending on the manufacturer.
Don’t put off having it replaced when your mileage reaches the recommended interval. If it shreds or breaks entirely, you will have a major repair to do, along with a towing bill, not to mention possibly being stranded in the most unwanted place.
A loose Timing Belt will make a rattle/ticking/slapping noise, and will come from the front of the engine. This does not necessarily mean the front of the car. Some engines sit sideways under the hood. It will get louder or faster when you rev up the engine. If you suspect that your Timing Belt is loose, making noise, wearing out, or is due for replacement, don’t hesitate to come in to have us check it out as soon as you can.
Timing Belts fail without warning as often as with warning signs. Some cars are as hard to check the Timing Belt, as they are to change, so it is better to ask us. If the belt slips a notch, or breaks, the engine will shut down and stop immediately, leaving you stranded. Which is why we can’t stress enough to have the belt changed at the recommended intervals.
We recommend that you have the water pump replaced at the same time. This is entirely optional of course, but keep in mind that we are trying to save you money in the long run. 90% of the labor to change the water pump will already have been done on getting to the Timing Belt, because both are located in the same area, and both are difficult to get to.
While it is true that some water pumps can last longer than Timing Belts, many do fail, and will be very costly to replace at a later visit. Again, check your owner’s manual, and be sure to call us when your mileage says the Timing Belt is due.
Preventative maintenance is money well spent, and can save you hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars. Having just one preventative maintenance service done on your vehicle with every few oil changes is easier on your wallet.
